Hi, I may have heard the answer to this, but there is so much information to take in I think I have forgotten alot!
Why is there not more local adoptions? In Victoria, I think remember hearing the number of 15 per year. This is so little, and there are so many out there who want to adopt - I just thought there would be more....does anyone know?

People keep their children. It is pretty much that simple. We have measures as a society in place to support this and it is a really good thing.
I suppose the thing we need to keep in mind is that adoption is not there to support those that wish to adopt a child, it is always about the needs of the child and there would be few that would dispute that when family ciricumstances are okay this is the best outcome.
To reliquish the birth parents would also have to admit to themselves and everyone who knew that they were pregnant that they wouldn't/couldn't parent. This is a massive decision and one that I think very few of us would be honest enough to make. I know I couldn't do it. I have nothing but respect for those who can put the best interests of their children first. It is an amazingly selfless act.

I think you said that really well - and really made it clear in my head. I think at some level I am still amazed that there are so few adoptions, but then if we can support people to keep their children then that is so much better for the kids.
I can't imagine how people come to the decision to adopt their children out - must be heartbreaking for everyone, including the extended family.
