Guess we should start a weight loss thread as this is something on everybody's mind especially if you have been on IVF or other drugs. I gained 10 kg in two weeks on cortisone for my autoimmune fertility problem. If it had worked fine, but it didn't. But with a strict carb reduced and relatively high protein diet with a naturopath I have so far lost 11 kg - my first goal is achieved to e 75kg again (my all time high was 85kg with 164cm height). I want to get back to 65 kg and keep it, so still a bit to go. My first real challenge is going to be the end of May - one week in Fiji - and on holiday you would rather indulge on cocktails and good food than lettuce leaves and water. But I am stubborn - I will get there Cheers Flossyinoz

I think this is a great topic and maybe we could start a Weight Loss Buddy Group. I have PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) and there are a lot of symptoms that you can get with it, although not everyone gets them all, unfortunatley I seem to have just about all of them and have been big most of my life Weight is an issue with PCOS and it makes it very easy for women to put the weight on but extreamly hard for them to get it off. I also put on weight due to IVF and went from 103 kgs to 117 kgs So at my heaviest I was 117 kgs but over the last 8 to 10 months I've since lost 4 kgs. ( My doctor put me on Optifast - I had to replace, breakfast and lunch with one of the shakes and then just have dinner ) I did stop doing the Optifast thoughfor a while because food has never been my problem, as I only eat steamed veggies, chicken, fish and a small amount of meat. Oily foods tend to make me sick which is why I love my steamed veggies and chicken. ;D My biggest problem is actually eating as I'm not normally hungry in the morning or at lunch or at times I would have lunch but then not feel like dinner, so I would be eating only one meal a day most of the time, which also isnt good for weight lose but if you dont feel like eating it seems silly to force yourself to, but now I try and have 3 meals a day or at least 2. I am working in very small steps as its much easier to keep going that way and so my next gaol is to lose another 4 kgs and get down to 109 I will admit though to being a happy BBW (Big Beautiful Woman) and am happy being the size I am. I even was on the Today Tonight show a few years ago with the Melbourne BBW group that I belonged to, pointing out to people that our group was happy the way we were. But when we started getting into adoption, we started ther Inter-Country process in 2005, I felt I would stand a better chance of getting approval if I weighed a little less. Health wise I have perfect cholesterol levels, my blood pressure is only a couple of numbers over what it should be, and I am active. Anyway it would be nice to have other people to chat with about weight loss and maybe swap recipes or other weight loss ideas.

I have a friend who has PCOS and the related weight problems. She is now on the pill to regulate hormones and several other meds to lower her insulin levels (which is one of the main problems in gaining weight - the glucose insulin levels) and has lost 10kg just by being on the drugs and then also did rigorous excercise. Unfortunately I do not remember the other meds she is on, but can ask her again if you want me to.
She is now on the same diet I am on with my naturopath but has just started, so I cannot say if this approach is successful for her.

I also have to be on the pill to regulate my cycle as I could go 8 to 12 months without a monthly cycle and then when it would come I would have it for 6 to 10 weeks. So my IVF doctor said that I needed to go on the pill to regulate my cycle otherwise I run a very high risk of cervical / uterine cancer due to not having a regular cycle. As for the insulin lowering tablets, normally Metformin (some trade names for Metformin include Glucophage, Diabex, Diaformin, Fortamet, Riomet, Glumetza) but they dont work for for everyone with PCOS. I was put on the tablets a few years ago but they didnt do anything for me and infact they actually made me sick, so I was taken off them. I'd like to hear though how your friend does go on the same diet that you are on.

My friend has started sensationally on the diet, she lost 2.5kg in the first week which scared the naturopath a little as it is too much, so he is trying to adjust her carb ration to a bit higher now. I guess it is because she was already on insulin lowering meds and the diet targets to level out your glucose/insulin household. Like me she is missing bread as in this diet you have to cut out all bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and starchy vegetables. You live on salads and veggies, some fruit and all sorts of meat and a bit of cheese which limits your choice in restaurants quite a bit. But you can have cruscitts or rice thins or a bit of mountain bread (flat lebanese bread), costs you a lot in your daily carb allowance but at least gives you the feeling you can have a sandwich once in a while.
