Well I thought I would start another topic to follow on from the Agency Meeting topic.
This one will be about the appeal and what happens with it.
Anyway following the meeting we had with Connections on November 29th 2007, where 2 staff members told us that from reading our life story they felt I was very depressed and isolated and that I had low self esteem.
A letter finally arrive, the week after they said it would, of course it didnt have any information on counsellors or on the appeal process, like we were told it would have.
This is what we recieved on December 12 2007 (funny thing is it was dated December 12 and got to us on December 12, I would sure like to know how that works)
Dear David and Kim,
Following our meeting on 29.11.2007 we are writing to inform you of our reasoning for not recommending that you be assessed to be possible adoptive parents
Despite your many strengths as a couple, we have made this recommendation due to our concerns about the following issues:
Parenting a child requires a lot of involvement and support with and from other agencies such as Maternal Child Health, the adoption agency, therapists, groups, child care, doctors, other parents and so on. We had some concerns that Kim appears to be quite isolated and does not have networks currently aside from the animal breeders. As she has not worked for a long time, and has not had to deal with a wide range of situations, she may have difficulties engaging with people and services in order to help parent the child. There were some concerns that there may be or have been some levels of depression for Kim and we recognise that there can be much grief and pain for many applicants around their desire to become a parent and the losses sustained when this is unsuccessful.
It appears that David has been supportive of Kim and Kim also supports David. However some questions for us remain around David's own difficulty articulating his motivation and understanding of the situation. Adoption can bring a range of complexities to a family around a childs loss, attachment and identity within a new family, or contact with birth family, and sometimes children struggle with questions around adoption for some years. We were unsure that David understood the child's needs and how these can change and affect couples over time. It is important that each individual in the family is able to understand and describe the needs of the child.
We recognise how difficult it is to hear the recommendation that we not procees with your application. We would strongly recommend you obtain some counselling to talk through this. Additionally if you have any issues or concerns with regard to our recommendation at this point please contact:
