Hi Can anyone give me any further information regarding Centacare adoption program. From what I understand the birth parents have access to regular visits and updates with the child should they wish even after adoption has taken place. Have just recently started looking at intercountry and local adoption and just trying to find my way. Any help appreciated. Good day to all Jeannene

Jeannene,
In Victoria where you live decides which agency you can use. Obviously Centacare is responsible for your region. So you don't have a choice and the agencies like Centacare or Anglicare are only agents for the Department of Social Services. That means there is only one adoption program statewide in Victoria. Australia now promotes open adoptions which means the birth mother can have access of up to 4 times a year if she so chooses and it is put into the adoption order. So all the information in our Adoption questions section regarding adoption would be relevant for you.

Hi Jeannene, We are on the waiting list at Centacare. And yes the adoptions/permanant care are open. Meaning the birth parents do have visitation if they wish up to four times per year. Mostly the visitation is supervised and after completing our education groups i now understand why visitation is so important. Molly

Hi.
We went through Centacare for our first adoption and just to clarify, they operate independently from the DHS. There are two adoption agencies for local adoption in Victoria, the DHS and Centacare.
The DHS tends to "outsouce" to Anglicare etc, but Centacare is the catholic independent agency with their own list (but can access all children across the state) and they do their own education classes and assessment but are not like Anglicare.
We found them to be really great and slightly quicker than the DHS process, even though it is exactly the same, they are just better staffed.
All local adoptions are open, and it is necessary to give your child a sense of identity when he/she grows. Access with birth parents can be up to four times per year in person or via mail.
The first couple of times are supervised and then once the adoption is finalised you sort it out with the birth parents yourselves. It sounds difficult but it is pretty easy.

Yes, we considered going through Centacare because they have a pretty good reputation and we were told that most of the total Victorian adoptions are actually placed through Centacare. I am not sure if you can chance half way through the process or not but if we got approved and went on to adopt we would probably consider going with Centacare for a second adoption.
