Hi all, I just talked to Anglicare today and they said they had loads of applications at the moment and would probably not be able to commence assessing us for at least 1-2 months. Is this the case everywhere or just at Anglicare Yarraville? Why the sudden inlfux of applications?

I will let you know once we send back our paperwork and get a time frame for our social worker visits. Maybe the influx of applications has to do with Baby Catherine. I've heard that anytime a baby is abandoned and there have been a couple over the last 10 years, once they put it on the news, DHS and all the areas get inundated with applications to adopt.

I don't think baby Catherine was the reason as it takes a long time to get an application in, as you have to visit the education seminars first and do all the paperwork and the life story just takes a couple of weeks or months, depending how intensely you are working on it. So there must be another reason for it.

I didnt mean that they have people up to our stage of the process.
I just meant that with so many people applying to adopt an abandoned baby they must get busy trying to sort out the genuine interest from those who just want to help.
I know at our education group they said that there were not a lot of applicants at the moment throught victoria, but this was before baby Catherine was abandoned.
Also I dont know what its like in the western region but in the southern region the social workers/duty workers only work Mondays and Thursday between 9am and Midday
Or maybe the influx in your region cam from the March education groups?

The Western Region social workers are there every day, some may have one free day a week. It must be the March or ealier education groups for wahtever reason and strangely enough the West is quite big in applications anyway I think. Maybe it is because we have so many birthmoms here and when you are infertile or would like to have more kids other than bio kids it strikes you more here as most families have at least 3. I think in other areas there is rather the trend to the 1 or 2 kid faily. Werribee seems to a growth corridor in more than one respect

Hi girls, I have emailed someone today that went to the Yarraville one this week or last week and they reckon it was packed out! I was also reading the update DHS website and was really surprised to learn only about 65 children where placed through PC in one year!
(hopefully this beautiful woman will be poping her head in here for some info and support as well)
I guess this could be a good thing and bad thing..........parents are in general better or their are kids slipping through the gap.

Well and we have just been told that our allocation of social workers probably won't be until later this year or even beginning of 2008, so about 6 months after handing in the application. To be honest I had not imagined that this would take this long, then add the social worker interviews, we may be on the list mid 2008 and then who knows. By mid 2008 I am 45 - how long do I have to wait to finally become a mummy! Flossyinoz

Kate is your niece being currently cared for by family or within the foster care system? Are they looking at adoption for her or permanent care?
For what I have heard with permanent care it take take up to 2 years for a child to be placed because they have to allow the birth/first parents the time to improve their situation. Look at baby Catherine she is currently in foster care for the next 2 years - it's highly likely that her current foster family will become her permanent care family. But the current family law court involvement is 2 years of foster care.
From what I know of local adoption (and I am sure flossy and Kim will correct me if I am wrong) it can take up to at least 3 months for a child to be placed with their adoptive family .
Flossy I guess we should be kissing the feet of vic DHS after all look what they are saying in WA - that it takes over a year just to get to their information session.
Oh! by the way ALL ICA information sessions in victoria are currently on hold.!!!!!! With no expected date for re-opening at this stage.

Jacinta,
You are right compared to ICA local in Victoria is still relatively fast and my region has told me their longer queue has several reasons, basically lacking manpower due to illness and more demand in terms of applications. I asked about how many people were currently on the Vic adoption register and they said about 25 couples (without people currently being assessed) which I think is a bit on then low side. I recall that 2 years ago when we went to our info session they said 65 and I thought that would have gone up in the meantime. So statistically the odds would not be too bad, but then statistics don't really apply in a matching process.
Oh and Kate's niece is up for adoption, not pc, seems very strange that here we all are waiting for a child and there is a child in need for parents.

Hey, I have been reading some posts and have been wondering what the status is for Kates niece? What has happened to her and why isn't she adopted yet? Confused...

I think I leave this for Kate to answer if the wants to. It is a long story, but she may not want to go into it in public.

HOpefully if she feels she can she can send me a PM, or she can just say, mind your own business and that will be OK too. I am just reading bits and pieces and can't really follow the story. Waiting.
