Hi guys just after some info on what happens during the assessment process. What do they look for when they come to visit your home, are they big on having a close extended family. Hubby and I have been doing reno's on a 150 yo cottage slow process. I have no family living near me,my parents live a couple of hours away. What about finances do they look at that. So many questions,as I said we don't start our education till early 2010 so we are a long way off but it's nice to be prepared. Hope everyone is well talk soon Sx

For local adoption, you need to fill in a whole lot of paperwork. They want medicals, they want police checks, they want to know you are working. I am sure they are not looking for millionaires, because they could just go overseas and buy 6 kids like Jolie. They just want to make sure that having the child doesn't put undue financial pressure on your lifestyle and family. They don't want you to regret having a baby.
House wise, then I think they want to know that you have a house to bring a baby home in. It is clean/ tidy and big enough to house a baby.
In terms of safety they just have a look around to see safety issues, like if you have firearms, smoke detectors, fire blanket, storage of medicines, poisons, and knives and if you have stairs, making sure they are safe.
You say your family lives away, but what they want to see is that you will be willing to access any services that may be available to you if you need them. They want to know if you have support people if you need them. If you are stressed, who can you rely on to help? Renovations are not an issue, as long as you keep the area safe while you are working and the are is out of bounds for children while you are working and tools are put away blah, blah, blah!
Does that help?? Waiting..

Simone - everything you can think of, they will cover!
You will write a life story and alot of things they talk about will come from that (they use it as a guide).
We have an old house that we have been slowly renovating for years. It's neat & clean, but some rooms are not done. This does not seem to be an issue, we have chatted about general painting & gardening with them, when they have been over. It's nice to have a bit of a chat away from all the questioning.
Finanaces - all of it. You will complete this with all your paperwork & it will come up in your assessment interviews.
My advice to you would be try not to think about it too much, go with the flow when the assessments start. It's all about you & your DH, so a topic you should know well : ) Writing the life story really prepares you for the live questioning, once you have completed that you will feel more prepared.
